QAL Block 2 – Weathervane

Hi everyone!

Today I have for you the tutorial for Block 2 of the QAL. It is called Weathervane.

There are some 8th of an inch measurements in this block but you shouldn't have too much trouble, please let me know if you do!

Cutting

Background Fabric

4 x 2 ¼” Squares (A)
4 x 2 5/8” Squares, cross cut diagonally to make 8 triangles (B)
8 x 2 ¼” Squares, draw a line diagonally across squares (E)

Fabric 1 (pink) 

4 x 2 ¼” Squares (A)
4 x 2 5/8” Squares, cross cut diagonally to make 8 triangles (B)

Fabric 2 (Grey) 

4 x 3 7/8” Squares (C)

Fabric 3 (floral) 

1 x 3 7/8” Square (D)


Piecing

Corner Patches

Sew a Background fabric Unit B to Fabric 1 Unit B, this will make a square, Press seam to Fabric 1 and clip off the little ears.

Join these squares to the Unit A’s as in the picture above. Press seam to unit A.

Join the two rectangles together to complete the 4 corner patches. You trim these patches to 3 7/8” square.

Middle Patches

Place a Unit E over the left corner of unit C, sew along the drawn line.

Cut corner off using ¼” seam allowance, Press seam to background fabric.

Repeat with the right hand corner of unit C. You now have 4 complete middle patches.

Piecing the block

Lay all the completed patches out in the layout of the block.

Piece the top 3 patches together to form a rectangle, repeat the process for the middle and bottom rows.

Join the rows together to complete the block. Your finished block should measure 10 ½” square.

You now have a complete Weathervane Block! And you only need one of these for the quilt!

Do you know the finished size if the half square triangle units? I always question my accuracy on those little buggers!
